My beauty regime and DIY face serum recipe

I used to be the girl who purchased expensive moisturisers, toners and cleansers. If they were expensive, then they had to be good for me right?

Oh how wrong I was.

Over recent years it's become pretty common knowledge that what you put ON your skin, is absorbed INTO your body. Now think about these chemical-laden products, full of synthetic chemicals that have the ability to damage to our bodies. They contain endocrine disrupters that throw our hormones off balance and increase the toxic load on our liver to name a few side effects.

With this in mind, I shifted gears, ditched my heavily perfumed and rather toxic skincare brand (starts with C and rhymes boutique! haha) and turned to oil as my moisturiser, make up remover and skin everything!

Now before you think 'my skin is already oily, I could never PUT oil on my skin', let me explain. I thought the same....before I tried it!

So the science behind using oils on your skin and not turning into a total oil slick, involves a beautiful feedback mechanism in our bodies. After cleansing our face, we replace our bodies oil with a nice clean oil, our body will stop producing so much because it already has plenty! It will stop overcompensating and become beautifully balanced! You know how oil and water don't mix? What about the chemistry of 'like dissolves like'?

Well, both of those science lessons also apply when cleaning our face! When you massage your skin with oil, it dissolves the oil that’s become embedded in your pores over the day. If you then add some warmth to open your pores, all the old hardened oil in your pores can be removed with a cloth!

So what are the other benefits of using oils on your skin? Other than it being beautifully simple, clean, nourishing ritual to develop I mean.

Reasons to get your DIY on.....

  1. Oils are cheap! You heard right. I did the calculations and a three month supply of my homemade face serum comes out at $7.45! Not $77.45, $7.45! This is a huge difference when compared to the hundreds I had been spending on skin care years ago, and even from the 30ml store-bought organic face oil I had more recently been using which cost me $47.95 and lasted 2 months.

  2. You only need a drop or two of oil, a little goes a long way.

  3. It's so easy, it literally takes 5 minutes (once you've sourced your carrier oils and essential oils) and lasts months.

Plus, as a bonus, they makes beautiful gifts. I gifted my signature serum to my girlfriends a few Christmas's ago and it got rave reviews. I also did a Xmas DIY workshop last Christmas and have had wonderful reports from the woman who came and made the serum (they obviously did NOT gift it away!).

Now on to the actual recipe! Now in all honesty, you can make this as simple or as complicated as you like.

If you want to use one carrier oil and whack 10 drops of Lavender in it, than that'll work too, but I've chosen to use a mix of three carrier oils and all the beautiful skin loving essential oils I own. You can also use evening primrose oil or rose hip oil as carriers, but obviously the price will increase accordingly.

Now I source my carrier oils from iherb online HERE. I get my organic Jojoba oil, Apricot Kernal oil and Almond oil in 115ml bottles for $9.99. This lasts me well over a year, making gifts and using for myself. I buy my Vit E from the same place for $5.99.

I only ever use doTERRA essential oils in my face serum, as they're 100% pure and therapeutic grade, so you know exactly what you're getting. Click join & save HERE to purchase these for yourself.
