Lead Free Water Bottles
Did you know that most insulated stainless steel bottles contain lead soldering in the manufacturing process?
A lead sealing dot is used to seal the vacuum insulation at the base of products. The lead dot is often covered by a shaped cap covering the base (look out for a horizontal weld line close to the base of a bottle), a metal or silicone cover disc attached to the vessel bottom, or even with a paint finish (as shown).
However, if the seal is faulty, should you drop the water bottle (and lets me fair, kids drop them ALL THE TIME 🤪) and it gets damaged and this piece comes loose, or the paint chips, there’s a chance the lead can be exposed to your skin.
so what do we do?
Do I recommend you throw out your expensive stainless steel drink bottle because you can see a lead dot on the bottom of the bottle? NO! If the paint or cap is intact, just keep an eye on it. Just buy better if you’re upgrading.
If you are using an insulated stainless steel water bottle with exposed lead (chipped and exposed over the lead dot) I would immediately stop. Do not let children touch the exposed lead. It is now recognised globally that there is ZERO safe level of lead for children. 👧

Some notes:
There are many great stainless steel brands out there who use lead soldering technology, but test for lead and can confidently say their bottles are “lead-free” as their encapsulation is inaccessible.
If you want to know if a brand is lead free and the website doesn’t say, contact the company directly. They should be transparent about it with you.
lead free water bottle brands for toddlers
Here is a list list of brands who do great stainless steel/glass and silicone straw or cup for proper oral development. Some of these may use lead dot soldering BUT for toddler age, the risk of hard knocks is less in my opinion.
