Low Tox Cookware Guide
Did you know that a single scratch on a non stick pan can release 9000 microplastic particles into your food, and a broken coating may release over 2 million.
why you should avoid teflon non-stick cookware
Teflon (aka PTFE-coated cookware) may seem convenient, but it comes with serious health and environmental concerns. Here’s why you need to ditch it:
⚠️ Health Risks
Releases Toxic Fumes – When heated above 450°F (232°C), Teflon releases harmful chemicals (PFAS and PFOA) into the air.
“Teflon Flu” – Inhaling these fumes can cause flu-like symptoms, known as polymer fume fever.
Hormone Disruption & Cancer Concerns – PFAS chemicals in Teflon are linked to hormonal imbalances, immune issues, and even certain cancers.
Microplastics & Chemical Leaching – Over time, scratched or worn pans can release harmful particles into your food.
🌎 Environmental Concerns
“Forever Chemicals” (PFAS & PFOA) – These toxic compounds don’t break down and have contaminated water supplies worldwide.
Not Biodegradable – Teflon-coated cookware contributes to waste and pollution, harming wildlife and ecosystems.
🔥 Safety Issues in Cooking
Scratches Easily – Once the coating is damaged, it becomes a risk for ingesting harmful particles.
Not Safe for High Heat – Teflon breaks down at high temperatures, releasing toxic gases.
Not Durable – Non-stick pans wear out quickly, needing frequent replacements.
the issue with ceramic
Ceramic Coated coating are easily scratched revealing aluminum underneath (which we know has harmful health effects. There is also a lack of transparentcy in coating materials which leave a data gap, we have no idea what is leaching from them.
Safe Choices
stainless steel
Always look for brands with 18/10 or 18/8. The numbers refer to the percentage of chromium and nickel in the steel. The higher the nickel content, the better the resistance to corrosion and the more non-reactive the cookware is.
Stainless steel tips:
Heat the pan on medium heat for about 2 minutes before adding oil.
A properly heated pan creates a natural nonstick effect (this is called the Leidenfrost effect!).
To test: Sprinkle a few drops of water—if they form beads and "dance" on the surface, it’s ready!
cast iron
Test the weight before buying—make sure you’re comfortable lifting it, especially if it’s going to be your main pan at home. Keep an eye out in thrift shops and second hand shops as vintage cast iron is an awesome score!
Cast iron tips:
Seasoning is Key! What is seasoning? A layer of polymerised oil that makes the pan nonstick and prevents rust. Before first use, apply a thin layer of high-smoke-point oil (flaxseed, or avocado). Then bake upside down at 230°C (450°F) for 1 hour, then let cool. The best part: every time you cook with oil, you’re improving the seasoning! WIN
BONUS IRON INTAKE. Studies have shown that cooking four iron-rich snacks in cast iron pots increased iron content by 16.2% in children, compared to snacks cooked in Teflon-coated pans. PMC23868537
wrought iron + carbon steel
Pro Tip: Wrought iron and carbon steel are amazing alternatives for those who love cast iron’s benefits but want something lighter and easier to handle!

my personal favourites
I've had my Solidteknics for 5 years now. Best investment ever! SO much lighter and easier to handle than a cast iron pan. That being said, I do love my Ironclad pan also. Lifetime warranty, hand it down to your kids!
