I love coffee! And for the most part, it loves me back.
It’s exciting seeing so much awesome research come out on the benefits of drinking coffee BUT there is also a lot of studies coming out about microplastics and we’re now starting to see the effects on microplastic in the human body.
Coffee machines are a source of daily microplastics. Whether you’re drinking it from a cafe in a plastic coated takeaway cup or making it at home.....But there are things we can do to minimise (likely not completely avoid in most cases) your exposure, so let’s dive in.
where plastic is hiding
Water Reservoir (Tank): some models use BPA-free plastics, but others may not.
Internal Tubing & Fittings: These parts are under pressure and heat—so increased microplastic shedding.
Pump Housing: The vibratory pump that powers most home machines can have plastic outer parts or seals.
Group Head: The part of the espresso machine where the portafilter (the handle with the coffee basket) is inserted.
Portafilter: The handle with a basket on the end that holds the ground coffee. Can be plastic in lower-end models, though it should ideally be metal to withstand heat and pressure.
Drip Tray & Grill: Often plastic with a stainless-steel cover. While not in contact with hot liquids, it's still part of the overall construction.
what to look for
Prioritise machines with stainless steel boilers, portafilters, and internal tubing to minimise plastic exposure.
Opt for glass, porcelain or stainless steel water reservoirs to avoid plastic contact with water.
Brands that list materials clearly and avoid plastic where heat is involved.
